Beinn a' Ghlo From Ben Vrackie
Ben Vrackie
A long weekend in the Southern Highlands promised a few wintery Munros and some high quality early season hillwalking. In the event, an unwelcome blister curtailed Plan A and forced a rethink. Still, we managed an interesting ascent of Ben Vrackie above Pitlochry and an enjoyable (as always) walk up Glen Tilt above Blair Atholl.
Ben Vrackie (841m; speckled hill) was busy with Saturday folk who were rewarded with dry, if cool, weather and reasonable views. Immediately below the summit crags, Loch a'Choire lay covered in a sheet of ice, a reminder that we were still rooted in mid-February!

As if that wasn't enough, the last 200m of the climb were enlivened by some slippery snow and the top felt like a completely different mountain from the supporting slopes.

Sunday's attempt at Carn a' Chlamain was thwarted by the aforementioned developing blister and we settled instead for a 15-mile tramp up and down beautiful Glen Tilt, not visited for a few years now but always a pleasure - both on foot and bike!

The walk was greatly enhanced by the warmth of the sun that has finally climbed high enough in the February sky to make it's presence felt. It's been a long wait!
