Continuing rubbish weather prompted a change of
plan this weekend and this straightforward Perthshire hill seemed a better bet
than a long day in cloud and drizzle on Ben Nevis.
Glen Turret
The high start (350m) offered by the car park at
the Loch Turret Reservoir dam helped get us off to a good start and we fair
cantered along the loch-side track to the head of the head of Glen Turret. Unlike a previous visit, there was no circling pair of hen harriers to brighten the day, but we did get to see a number of noisy ring ouzels that impressed at least one member of the group!
Loch Turret Reservoir
After all this summer’s rain, the boggy ground
between the end of the track and the skyline was even wetter than usual and it
was a relief to gain the firmer ground (and, alas, cloud) of the open
hill-side. Twenty minutes later, we were
huddled in the very welcome windbreak on the cold and windy summit of Ben
Chonzie (931m; mossy hill).
Still in cloud, we continued along the summit
ridge before turning SE to traverse the wide, flat grassy ridgeline and
eventually, the short, sharp climb up on to Carn Chois (786m). Then it was all
downhill over wet grassy slopes back down to the reservoir and the track back
to the dam. Despite the lack of views,
we’d enjoyed our day in the clouds and the decision to leave Ben Nevis alone
for another day had proved to be a good one.
After all, it wasn’t going anywhere!
